I think both this and the original would be deemed equally cheesy by most teenagers today. In terms of the remake, that is either an accomplishment, or a question about why it needed to exist.

Formulaic with too many ingredients. The only characters necessary were the child and the robots. As if an ex-boxer (Jackman) could teach anything to a video game fanatic about manning a remote controller. And the token love interest (Lilly), completely superfluous… it’s as if she had nothing better to do after escaping a remote island or something.

Builds an excellent crescendo of frustration.

Too busy, but still respectable. Jay Baruchel’s voice now officially grates (-10%).

Not sure who those people were in the credits – seemed like somebody’s iMovie masterpiece.

While generally regarded as a good-natured classic by adults, for children it is the most tragic story ever told about 20 minutes in.
