Footloose (2011) 40%
I think both this and the original would be deemed equally cheesy by most teenagers today. In terms of the remake, that is either an accomplishment, or a question about why it needed to exist.
Real Steel (2011) 50%
Formulaic with too many ingredients. The only characters necessary were the child and the robots. As if an ex-boxer (Jackman) could teach anything to a video game fanatic about manning a remote controller. And the token love interest (Lilly), completely superfluous… it’s as if she had nothing better to do after escaping a remote island or something.
Nothing But the Truth (2008) 70%
Builds an excellent crescendo of frustration.
How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014) 60%
Too busy, but still respectable. Jay Baruchel’s voice now officially grates (-10%).
Four Assassins (2012) 30%
Not much to it.
Freedom Downtime (2001) 50%
Revelatory, but could have used some external, professional influence in its direction and editing.
From Beneath (2012) 0%
Not sure who those people were in the credits – seemed like somebody’s iMovie masterpiece.
Frosty the Snowman (1969) 60%
While generally regarded as a good-natured classic by adults, for children it is the most tragic story ever told about 20 minutes in.
Gone Girl (2014) 70%
Expert treatment of control and perception in this thriller.
