Impressive partnership of mood and visual effect for its time.

Ponyo (2009) 80%
Wonderful animated fantasy, with a fair bit swimming under the surface.
The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia (2013) 30%
Just like “Field of Dreams”, only with no cornfields, Iowans, baseball, or production value. I understand this was a budget venture, but how much would a new name have cost? Or is the “Haunting in Connecticut” brand a surefire blockbuster that I’m not aware of?
Wreck-it Ralph (2012) 80%
Fabulous story idea decently executed. Both the writing team and the focus groups must have been multi-generational.
That’s What She Said (2012) 30%
Plays like a “Made for Cinemax” film. Dream role for Anne Heche. Most heterosexual males will find a caricature of an ex-girlfriend in here somewhere.
Attack of the Herbals (2011) 0%
Tough to imagine a worse film. Would take some effort to rise to the level of “unintentionally funny”.
The Maze Runner (2014) 60%
The “Lost”-style mystery sandwiched between slices of exposition keeps this interesting. Will not confirm whether the maze exit is guarded by a bunch of “divergents” competing in a “hunger game”.
Flight (2012) 60%
It’s not often I would write this, but I wish the movie was more ambiguous. That is, if “Whip” wasn’t such a complete mess, how does that affect the moral question with regard to “the public’s trust”? What if “Whip” was actually a more competent pilot after a couple of drinks (e.g. due to reduced stress, increased focus despite motor skill diminishment, etc.), and this could be objectively proven? Along the same lines, the ending is bothersome because even if “Whip” came to terms with his addictions, the introspection necessary for that to happen would inevitably make him more resentful toward external opinions of competence – he would never be accepting of having to serve time due to any notion of “violating the public trust”. Psychologically unsound, and reeks of focus group / studio modification.
TPB AFK: The Pirate Bay Away from Keyboard (2013) 50%
Moderately interesting. I would praise the depiction of a transition from bravado to humility, but I know too well how editing can fabricate a narrative, and I fear that is the case here (as it also is with every “reality” show in existence).
The Master (2012) 70%
The acting, and to a lesser extent the production detail, is outstanding. I wish the story as told held better interest.
